Introduction:
Finding my personal style has always been really important to me. Defining what style represents you feels like a big deal. Like it will tell the whole world who you are.
Well, actually, it’s not that serious, and after many years, I realized you can be whoever you are regardless of your style. In fact, I encourage you to have multiple styles that feel good to you, or even, if you’re brave, to create your own.
Finding your path in fashion always starts with following current trends. I know... for those of you here to elevate your style, it feels a little off-putting to hear that. But, to see future style trends coming from afar, you have to be at least slightly familiar with the current trends.
That doesn’t mean you have to use them. Come on, stay with me.
As Nina Garcia (a Colombian-American journalist for Elle Magazine) said:
"Style is a deeply personal expression of who you are, and every time you dress, you are asserting a part of yourself."

The Trend Follower Phase:
Usually, for most people, we start using something or adopting a habit after seeing it being used around us for a while. This is where it starts getting interesting.
Most people need to see a trend all around them before even considering being part of it. First, because they don’t know if it’s actually going to be a huge trend, but mostly because when only a small part of the population is using it, they don’t see it as socially acceptable and fear being rejected or mocked.
If you’re here, I presume you want to be one of those who follow future trends before they become common, right? Don’t worry, we are getting there.
I don’t have a personal tip on how to be 100% sure something is going to become trendy (because, you know... I’m human too and not Miranda Priestly), but here’s the path I followed to become more and more aware of the next big thing (spoiler alert: it worked!!!).
Be a trend follower for a little bit. I know!!! It sounds common and awful, but as I said, you do not need to wear it! Just be aware of it. Start watching fashion shows (especially haute couture).
Often in Haute Couture, you’ll find a lot of information in the outfits you’re shown. Try to focus on the small details that appear again and again as you watch the show. That’s a hint. It doesn’t mean it’s obviously going to be the next trend, but you’ll find common points in different fashion shows from different designers, each in their own style.
Example for SS/2024 seen in Fashion Weeks
- Bow: Chanel, Dior, Giambattista Valli
- Smokey eye: Yenesai, Georges Hobeika, Dior
- Glazed skin: Schiaparelli
- Cowboy: Pharrell Williams (Louis Vuitton), Isabel Marant, Schiaparelli, Lemaire, Egonlab, Dsquared2, Stella McCartney, SportMax

That’s why it’s important to find your own style, so you can adapt what you see for yourself! You’ll never feel uncomfortable adopting the next trend!
Discovering Personal Style:
First of all, as a good Virgo, I suggest you create categories on each social media platform you use (Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest). When you see a photo or video you like the style of, save it in there.
After a while, you’ll look back at that category and probably identify the beginning of a style you like (old money, 70’s, cool girl, whatever....). It could be a mix of many styles (in that case, which is also mine, I suggest you create multiple categories on Pinterest to give names to your different styles).
By identifying what you like, you can start experimenting by wearing it for real! Start with what you already have, and if it’s too complicated, wear a capsule outfit with one or two new pieces to elevate your style and try it without breaking the bank.
Changing style shouldn’t be about buying a whole new wardrobe but finding the pieces that will make your look better and in the way you want it to be perceived. I have pieces I can use for different outfits and styles—it’s all about styling, and a bit about the pieces, actually...
To elevate my style, I followed Instagram influencers with the energy and style I dream to have, but who are NOT following current trends. Watching fashion shows helps you find the next trend, but doesn’t really help you style it, depending on where you’re going, I guess. If you go far enough on their page, you’ll see that the current trends were what they wore way before.
The Role of Confidence:
I bet you saw this coming, but the true secret about fashion is confidence.
It actually works as a “virtuous” cycle (at least it did for me): the more confident I was, the better my style was, and the better my style was, the more confident I was! How amazing is that?!
In my opinion, the best way to grow confidence in style is to try! Fake it ‘till you make it!
At first, you’ll be afraid. Going out in a new style, even if it looks exactly like you’ve imagined, will be scary—at least the first time. But soon enough, you’ll feel relief, and as time passes, you’ll be able to go out looking more and more like the person you’ve always wanted to become. Because it is you, you’re just getting closer to the person you’ve always been inside but were too scared to embrace.
I know style may sound like a superficial subject to most people, but if you’re here, I believe you’re better than that. This is just the beginning of this amazing journey of discovering yourself through clothes, styles, and multiple other things that make you, you.
Cultural and Social Influences:
Fashion is more than just clothing; it's a reflection of cultural and social dynamics. Our personal style is often shaped by the cultural backgrounds we come from and the social environments we navigate. These influences can provide a rich tapestry of inspiration, helping us create a look that's both unique and meaningful.
Cultural heritage plays a significant role in fashion choices. Traditional garments, patterns, and textiles from one's culture can serve as a foundation for personal style. For instance, someone with a heritage rooted in vibrant African prints might incorporate these bold patterns into their everyday wardrobe, blending tradition with modernity. Similarly, the intricate embroidery of Indian fashion or the minimalist elegance of Japanese design can inspire unique style statements that honor one's roots while showcasing individuality.
The social circles we move in also influence our fashion sense. From the laid-back vibe of a creative community to the polished look expected in corporate settings, our surroundings shape our wardrobe choices. It's not just about fitting in; it's about expressing who we are within those contexts. Being aware of these influences allows us to consciously choose elements that resonate with our true selves, rather than just conforming to external expectations.
Consider iconic trendsetters like Rihanna or Pharrell Williams. Rihanna seamlessly integrates Caribbean influences into her cutting-edge fashion, while Pharrell mixes street style with high fashion, often drawing from his African-American heritage. These style icons show us that embracing cultural and social influences doesn't limit our fashion choices; it enriches them. By acknowledging and incorporating these elements, we can create a personal style that's both authentic and innovative.
Becoming a Trendsetter:
Defining your personal style is an empowering journey, but becoming a trendsetter takes it a step further. It means not just following trends but setting them, influencing others with your unique vision. Here’s how you can transform from a style enthusiast into a fashion leader.
First off, trendsetters are confident in their individuality. Embrace what makes you unique, whether it's a love for vintage fashion, an affinity for bold colors, or a penchant for mixing high-end with high street. Authenticity resonates with people and sets you apart in a world full of trend followers.
Innovation in fashion is about daring to be different. Play with unexpected combinations—mix textures, clash patterns, or juxtapose eras. The key is to experiment confidently. If you believe in your choices, others will too. Remember, many of today's biggest trends started as bold moves by someone who wasn't afraid to break the mold.
Practical Steps to Trendsetting:
1. Curate Your Inspiration: Follow diverse fashion influencers, designers, and artists. Draw inspiration from a wide range of sources, not just mainstream fashion.
2. Develop a Signature Look: Identify and refine elements that define your style. This could be a specific accessory, a color palette, or a particular silhouette that becomes your trademark.
3. Stay Ahead of Trends: Keep an eye on emerging trends but don’t be a slave to them. Instead, think about how you can put your unique spin on these trends.
4. Be Consistent Yet Flexible: While it's essential to have a consistent style, don’t be afraid to evolve. Trendsetters balance maintaining their core identity with the ability to adapt and grow.
Trendsetters don’t just wear clothes; they tell stories through their style. Your fashion choices can influence others to express themselves more freely and authentically. By staying true to your vision and confidently showcasing your unique style, you not only set trends but also inspire a broader movement towards individualism in fashion.
In the end, becoming a trendsetter is about more than just making bold fashion choices—it’s about leading with confidence, embracing your roots, and inspiring others to find and celebrate their unique style.
